Echad

Echad (אחד) United, One, First Strong’s #259

Genesis 2:24 24 This is why a man is to leave his father and mother and stick with his wife, and they are to be one flesh. (L’Basar Echad)

Deuteronomy 6:4  Hear O Israel, YHVH our God, YHVH is ONE (Shema Yisrael YHVH Eloheinu, YHVH Echad)

John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.” (Ani Va-Ha-Ab Echad)

In the early years of the church, scholars worked to define Elohim by what they observed, using words like “triune” and “Homoiousia” (of one essence) our LORD described himself with the word echadEchad is the Hebrew word for one, but more precisely it means a single entity but made up of more than one part.

There is another Hebrew word from the same root – Yachid which means single, uniform, and homogeneous. The meaning of Echad (A complex mixture of parts unified as one) is a confirmation of the Hebrew word Elohim which is translated as God. Elohim is a plural word – more than one being called God, though always combined with singular masculine verbs.

Isaiah 48:16  “Come close to me, and listen to this:
since the beginning, I have not spoken in secret,
since the time things began to be, I have been there;
and now Adonai Elohim has sent me and his Spirit.”

In this verse the speaker (Yeshua) is eternal, having been with Elohim and his spirit from the beginning. The nature of Elohim is a mystery, we can understand that there is one God YHVH, He is much more than a solitary entity, to me trinity seems so limiting.  YHVH is Echad.
