It’s time to start reading the Megillah in preparation for Purim and revel in all its wonderful drama and intrigue! Like when Mordecai refuses to bow to Haman. Doesn’t that moment send shivers down your spine?
You know the scene:
Haman has just been named second-in-command to King Achashverosh. The King decrees that everyone must bow before this powerful man. Everyone obeys... except for Mordecai.
Mordecai is so brave. So pious. So inspiring in how he refuses to commit any act of…
Um, what is Mordecai’s noble stance here exactly? Why isn’t he bowing?
You might be thinking: IDOLATRY! Mordecai is refusing to bow to Haman because that would be an act of idolatry, one of the greatest sins there is! But slow down just a second. Is bowing really “idolatry”? The Torah is full of examples of people bowing to other people. Abraham bows before the visitors that come to his tent. Jacob bows before Esau. Jacob’s sons bow before Joseph. You get the picture.
So… what is Mordecai’s real reason for not bowing down? What great value is he actually risking his life for, not to mention the well-being of his entire people?
It turns out, Mordecai has a good reason for refusing to bow. A very good reason. A reason, in fact, that has to do with the very essence of Purim and its lasting relevance for us today. |
