One of the most comforting truths related to being a Christian is what Paul wrote to Timothy in his second letter:
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
This is so comforting because we do not find the word “unless” in or following this great truth. That means that when the world is filled with uncertainty and fear, we have soundness of mind and no fear. That means that when troubles come that weaken the human spirit, we have power through the Holy Spirit.
Our world is currently in a state of chaos. There is talk of WWIII on the lips of many. There are rumors of other wars swirling. There is talk of a new COVID variant, fuel prices are soaring, supplies are dwindling – the negatives go on and on. But we, as Christians, need not fear. The One who knows the end from the beginning has made us a promise:
Hebrews 13:5-6 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
This tells us that whether the stresses are international or personal, military or emotional, fear is not our master.
Isaiah 46:9-10 Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure.”
The Bible has told us of God’s miraculous track record of faithfulness. His word has told us He can part the Red Sea, He can confuse our enemies, He can turn bitter water into sweet, He fights battles on our behalf. And the Bible has told us about the future, perilous times would come, the love of many would grow cold, Israel would take center stage on the world scene, and a host of other specific details that prove the word of God is living and powerful because the God of the word is living and powerful.
It has been said: When you find a Bible that is falling apart, you can be sure it belongs to a Christian who isn’t!
One of the reasons that much of the church is in the weakened state that it is today is the failure to examine the future – how the story ends. The ending is fabulous! No question there are trials and tribulations between now and the end, but the end overshadows them by far.
Think about these examples: Today you might be thinking, I am struggling to make ends meet. The end of the story is that one day you walk on streets of gold forever. Today you might be thinking, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. The end of the story is that where you’re going there is no pain or sickness. Today you might be thinking, how long is the Lord going to let this wickedness go on? The end of the story is that for one generation things will change in a moment and a twinkling of an eye and then God will respond to the wickedness of the world.
Psalm 121 I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.
Five times the Psalmist says that lifting your eyes to the Lord, the One who is our help, reminds us that God is in control and He never dozes off. He is always keeping watch over us. He is our protector, preserver, and provider from this time forth and even forevermore.
How do we know for sure? Remember the former things of old and that you already know the future. The Maker of heaven and earth is watching over you, so you don’t have to live in fear like the world.
He knows the end from the beginning and He is well able to handle everything that happens in the middle!
Jesus is coming soon!
Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus. |
