Israel Bible Center
The purpose of the prophecy

Hello Bible Students!

As you know (or maybe not?) the Israel Bible Center is designed for Christians who desire to discover the Jewish background and culture of their faith. That's why in our articles and courses, we focus on biblical Hebrew and the first century original context of the Scriptures.

Today's newsletter is mostly about the fascinating topic - prophets and prophecies!

A piece of Hebrew for you!

Haftarah (הפטרה) - it is a selection from one of the biblical books of the Prophets that is read in synagogue immediately after the Torah reading. Did you know that each Torah portion is paired with a passage from the Prophets?

It may be that haftarah passages were originally selected by randomly opening a scroll of one of the prophetic books and reading whatever one happened to find. Just take a look at this New Testament example: in the Gospel of Luke in which Jesus, visiting a synagogue in Nazareth, is handed a scroll of Isaiah and asked to open it and read from it. What Jesus is reading there is a haftarah.

What’s the Significance of Six Hundred Thousand?

What’s the Significance of Six Hundred Thousand?

In the Bible, numbers have meanings beyond the digits on the page. Case in point, the quantity of Hebrew slaves in Egypt: "(...) about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children". Based on this verse, some estimate the total number of  escapees exceeding two million! Is this true?

Burning Coals and Prophetic Calls

Burning Coals and Prophetic Calls

At the outset of Isaiah’s prophetic ministry, God appears to him in the Temple. When the prophet confesses that he is a "man of unclean lips", one of the Lord’s winged seraphim touches a burning coal to his lips. While this inauguration may seem strange or esoteric, Scripture provides a precedent for this event.

A new episode: Hope in Revelation

The role of the prophet is not to predict what is to come, but to speak about their present moment, so how does Revelation fit into the prophetic category?

We also discuss the ideas of a suffering Messiah and a victorious Messiah. How do Christians and Jews view concepts of "A new heaven and a new earth," and how do those ideas influence the way we live life in the here-and-now? We conclude the Revelation series with a Big Concept idea about the character of God.
