Mussar (מוּסַר) - literally, it means "correction" or "instruction," it also serves as the simple Modern Hebrew word for ethics. But it is most accurately described as "a way of life." This term is from the Book of Proverbs (1:2): "Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise." Mussar is virtue-based ethics — based on the idea that by cultivating inner virtues, we improve ourselves. This is in contrast to most Jewish ethical teachings, which are rule-based.
